Socratic Seminar
We have been using the "Socratic Seminar" this week to help with our discussion of the novel " The Children of Willesden Lane". How has the socratic seminar helped you and what suggestions would you make to improve it in your class?
The socratic seminar has helped me have a better understanding of the theme and plot of the story A suggestion i would make for my class is to use more commentary and real world experiences
The Socratic seminar has helped me with CHILDREN of WILLESDEN LANE book, because it helps me go below just surface. I t has helped me get a understanding of the things I didn't understand.
I agree with Cameron Scott because, I like how he worded what he said, and I feel that when we do the Socratic circle it does help get clarity on some statements made or questions asked that sometimes we do not understand.
I agree with Anthony because I really believe that we should have a longer time period, but I would say we should only use 10 minutes because 15 minutes takes to much time.
The Socratic circle helped me with making connections and help me with digging deeper in the story . The Socratic story also help me with expressing my thoughts about the book
The Socratic Circle has helped me by discussing important details with my peers. Its easier to talk about it than doing it on your own.It has also helped me by learning more important details.
The Socratic Seminar has helped me quite a bit with explaining the book a lot better than I used to. It also helped me to make many more real world connections with the book. Im not just finished with it yet, but very excited to see how it turns out
The Socratic circle has helped me to understand the concept of whats going on in the book Children of Willesden Lane.It also helped me how to make connections and discuss what I have to say.
I also agree with Tori Sargent about what she said referring to debate skills. I agree with her because while during the practice round of the Socratic circle I realized that I was kinda quiet and really never proved my point. So i feel like I could work on my debating skills as well.
The Socratic Circle has helped me in my classes a lot since we have started doing it. The Socratic Seminar has helped me because I can now show Mrs. Lavender that I do understand the book because I'm the Type of Person who doesn't like to highlight or annotate when I'm reading. It has helped me see what the author is really REALLY trying to say because it makes me think about think about the little things in the book which has also helped me with coming up with themes/central ideas. The last reason the Socratic Seminar has helped me is because I'm afraid of public speaking (I know it doesn't show!), the Socratic Seminar helps me because I'm more comfortable speaking by myself and with all of the attention on me when I don't want it to be. In class I think we should start with each person saying how they feel about the topic then we should all comment on what the other people said because in my class even though we have done the Socratic Seminar twice I think the inner circle as a problem with stating how they feel about the topic then commenting on other peoples opinions. Other than that I believe that the sixth graders this year will master the art of performing a Socratic Seminar.
The Socratic seminar has taught me that raising your voice isn't the only way to be heard sometimes you just need to wait your turn.I think that my class should work on letting different people talk because in class there is just two people going back and forward with each other and don't let anyone else say anything until the teacher says something about it.
The Socratic Seminar has helped me effectively answer questions and not saying the same thing over and over again. This has also helped me realize and understand what the book is saying because before I really couldn’t really understand the book and what I was reading. This also shows me how my classmates really think when they are serious and not playing. This activity has also helped me to not get as angry when people try to correct me.
I also agree with Nigel because I can also relate to Lisa’s feelings and emotions better.
I also agree with Anteria because this has shown me how to practice on speaking correct English.
I agree with Kristian D. because I am also one of those people who don't highlight and annotate while reading and now there is no misconception of any kind and it is clear that I understand.
The Socratic Seminar has helped me in many different ways in the book "The Children of Willesden Lane", such as: really realizing the different point of views that this book as shown. Also I suggest that next time we can make our opinions more convincing.
My suggestion would be to change the way the outer circle talks about the score they gave the inner circle. I think Mrs. Lavender and the outer circle should be the only ones who know what the outer circle gave the inner circle.
I agree with Kristian because I am not a very talkitive person when it comes to being in public but talking with alot of people and communicating with each other helps me with being myself.
The Socratic seminar has helped me because I can understand the book better and and look at it differently to analyze it better. By hearing someone else's opinion, it encourages me to look at the book in different perspectives.I would suggest that we do these more often on different topics, and that Ms. Lavender becomes part of the inner circle.
I agree with Niesha because by doing the Socratic seminar I can talk about how I feel on the book.
I agree with Brandi Barron because when I can orally do R23CI it makes it easier to put it n paper
