Nelson could keep his hatred in check was by not adding ammunition to the problem. What I mean by this is that he didn't add other problems to the main problem. He was a great leader because he was a good person and he didn't let the slaughter of his people stop him.

I agree with Kyla because Nelson did have a good heart and he wanted freedom to be in many places.

One interesting line to me was the second line in The New York Times piece on Nelson Mandela. " Even as Nelson Mandela fades from view, he retains a vital place in South Africa's public consciousness."

Unknown said...

Something that really stood out to me was," The government he formed when he finally won the chance was an improbable fusion of races and beliefs, including many of his former oppressors."

It's about how Mandela's government was not only one race or on religon.

Unknown said...

I think Mandela was able to"keep hatred check" and be the leader he was because hatred is not good to one another. You can't be a good leader and afford to hate people. when he got off prison, he didn't hate the people who put him there. He has a big heart.

Unknown said...

I agree with Kyla because Nelson did have a good heart like I said.

Unknown said...

I agree with Vincent because he did truly stay strong when his country or South Africa was weak.

Unknown said...

I find the quotation, " Never, never, and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another," to be the most interesting to me.

Unknown said...

Nelson Mandela kept his "hatred" in check by settling things peacefully. Mandela never killed but settled things peacefully by having meeting with white South Africans to come up with a plan to stop the madness. He did not make the situation worse. He was trying to set a good example for his people. As many people were violent and constantly fighting, he wasn't apart of it. He just watched and took everything in calmly instead of anger. Nelson Mandela is the World's leader.

Unknown said...

I agree with Joshua Lynum and Vincent.

Unknown said...

Nelson Mandela was a leader in his own way. He even fought for his rights, and freedom for his country. He kept his calm when he went to jail.

Unknown said...

Mr. Mandela was able to "keep hatred in check" because he was the type of person who focused on the good instead of bad ,and he wanted people to see that holding a grudge would just make him miserable.

Unknown said...

I agree with Joshua L that is a interesting quote it means a lot.

Unknown said...

After viewing the video i agree with
Kyla, because Nelson wanted to be freedom to be in many places.

Unknown said...

I think he was able to keep hatred and other things in check by knowing that two wrongs dont make a right and also knowing that one day everyone would know who he was and that he always focused on making sure he was doing what his mind set out for him to do as far as playing his par and not letting hatred and unbelievers get in his head and make him cahngehis life-set goal which he acheived.

Unknown said...

I also agree with Jeremy for agreeing with Kyla, because Nelson did have the best interest in his heart , and he was a good man.

Unknown said...

I agree with Rendy Cunningham because Mr.Mandela was always a focused man no matter what.

Unknown said...

I agree with Autumn Canty becauce he always tried to keep things calm.

Nelson could keep his hatred in check, because he didn't add any weapons to the issue. He was a good man, and he didn't let the killing of his people stop him.

Unknown said...

I agree with Kyla Hall because he did a lot of things that helped other people.

Unknown said...

I agree with Autumn Canty because he tried his best to keep things calm and have peace

Unknown said...

The reason I think he was able o keep the hate in check because he was and great leader and he was persistent. I think he was a great leader and he is persistent is because he was the first black president even though he went to jail.

Unknown said...

when they said he was a black hero and he was a black hero. That is the truth.

Unknown said...

I think Nelson was able to keep "Hatred in check" is because he was brave, and was a great leader and when everything was wrong he kept calm so people can know not to panic.

Nelson could keep his hatred in check by not adding weapons or violence. What i mean is that he didn't make more problems, or add more problems to the main problem. He was a great leader because of his determination, and he didn't let the killing of his people stop him.

Unknown said...

I agree with Kyla because Nelson was a good man, and he wanted freedom all over

Unknown said...

The line that interest me is "Mr. Mandela’s quest for freedom in South Africa’s system of white rule took him from the court of tribal royalty to the liberation underground to a prison cell to the presidency.

Unknown said...

I also agree with Charlie because Nelson did know when and when not to speak or say something.

Unknown said...

Nelson was able to keep hatred in check because he fought with peace, and didnt cause more problems. He always focused on the positive and never the negative.

Unknown said...

Mr. Mandela was able to keep hatred in check not only because he was a good leader, but he had one vision in mind and that was to make things equal between whites and blacks in Africa. He could carerd less because in the textt it said " was a well mannered man and he was honest and truthful, too.

Unknown said...

I agree with Joshua Lynum because that quote is very special and it has an in depth meaning.

Unknown said...

"Symbolizes Black Determination" are some words that I fund in the Times about Mandela that I think summarizes him as a person and what he did for his country and African Americans around the globe.

Unknown said...

I think Nelson Mandela was very Persistant or continuing firmly to an action because he didn't stop until he got peace.

Unknown said...

Kyla is right his people were being tootured and murdered, but he stop that soon after.

Unknown said...

I agree with Indigo because Nelson Mandela was a great leader and he making thing equal between the two ethnicities.

Nelson Mandela said "Hating clouds the mind . It gets in the way of strategy Leaders cannot afford ti hate. " What I found interesting in the obituary , Mandela forgave those who had imprisoned him.He also came back and handled his country.

Zoe is right. He was focusingg on hhis long term goal.

Unknown said...

I thinh that Nelson Mandela was very persistant or contiuing firmly to an act because he didn;t stop until he got peace.

Unknown said...

My favorite line in Mr. Mandela's obituary that was most intresting was "In this racially charged nation, Nelson Mandela is that rarity of rarities: a hero to blacks and to many whites." Which means that he was very rare and that blacks and even whites considered him as their hero.

Unknown said...

Nelson Mandela believed that blacks and whites should be equal but through his lifetime he tried to impact on the lives so that there could be freedom

Unknown said...

I think Nelson Mandela was able to keep hatred in check because he wanted freedom for African Americans. He wanted them to have the right to vote. He wanted them to be able to stand up for themselves without getting sent to jail or even getting killed.

Unknown said...

What line stood out to me was in his court room speech he said that he has cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. This meant that he wanted blacks and whites to have equal treatment in South Africa.

I agree with Antonerria because he didn't stop until he got peace.

Unknown said...

Nelson Mandela was able to keep hatred in check because he always fought back with kindness and he never answered racism with racism. He didn't care why others hated him he just cared about getting freedom for South Africa.

Unknown said...

A quote that I found interesting is: " No on is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than it's opposite."

Unknown said...

i agree with Zoe he did always focus on the positive.

Unknown said...

A qoute that was interesting was when he said "No one is born hating another person" that was interesting becauce that was so true and then the problem was that we had to much hatred towards each other.

Unknown said...

Nelson Mandela was able to keep his hatred in check because he didn't cause any problems and fought with peace.

Unknown said...

Robben Island Journal; With Vivid Palette, Mandela Depicts the Jailhouse Years
In this racially charged nation, Nelson Mandela is that rarity of rarities: a hero to blacks and to many whites.

I find this interesting because it is rare to find a man like Mr. Mandela.

I think the quote that Kenyah found is interesting.

Dsamuel6A said...

The quote "rise of a troublemaker" is interesting because so many people thought Mr.Mandela was trouble but when he became South Africa's president that was his rise.

Dsamuel6A said...

I argree with Justin Sharp.

I believe that Nelson Mandela was able to keep calm by not adding more problems, but concentrating on the main problem and compromising. By him compromising, it allowed less distraction and violence then what there could have been.Mandela was also able to be the leader he was because of how he kept calm and set amazing examples for the people.

Anonymous said...

There was a statement that Mandela walked in the courtroom wearing his religious attire. I admire how he had pride while walking into the courtroom and believed in his religion. I know I would have been scared, nervous, and anxious and would not have had any dignity or pride left in me .

Unknown said...

I think the reason he was able to
keep hatred in check because he knew what he had to do in order to accomplish his goal. He was a great leader and he thought that if South Africa was going to have a leader it should be a South African instead of white men that were doing wrong things.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Jeremy, Nelson Mandela didn't add any other problems to the main situation.

Anonymous said...

I also agree with Tyannia, Mandela did keep calm and collected while shown in public.

Unknown said...

One of the pieces I found was Mandela's speech before he went to prison. This piece interested me because he spoke wise words he wasn't afraid to die, and to me that's courage because he was ready to die and he had so much courage he was willing to spend his sentence.

Unknown said...

I agree with Brandi he did have a lot pride to make his speech in religious attire.

Unknown said...

Mandela was a man who fought for his freedom and his fellow Southern Africans freedom his whole life and now that he is gone we all celebrate his death.

Unknown said...

Nelson Mandela was a great leader towards South Africa because he believes in his country and friends. He wanted to make a great difference and it is sad that he died. We shouldn't be sad over his death, we should celebrate it; Mandela was able to keep hatred in check because he was working hard for it and fighting for it.

Unknown said...

I think Nelson Mandela was able to keep his "hatred" in check because he was a great leader and like the article said "Leaders can not afford to hate" . That statement was so true because leaders are always their self and don't care about what other people think or what other people have . They always keep their selves in check . Also he was always talking positive and focusing on positive things and not negative . Lastly he was very persistent in everything single thing that he did .

Unknown said...

A line that I thought was most interesting was this "To those who observed him closely, Nelson Mandela always carried himself as one who was born to lead." This statement means no matter where Mr. Mandela was located he was a great leader . It didn't even matter how old Mr. Mandela was for him to be an awesome leader !

Unknown said...

I agree with Vincent Thomas because Mandela was always calm when his country wasn't in the best of shape .

Unknown said...

I agree with Autumn Canty . Nelson Mandela was always making peace and I think of him as "PeaceMaker Mandlea."

Unknown said...

I lastly agree with Jeremy Broner because Mandela was never adding more to the main subject of the problem .

Montrell Sawyer said...

What quote most likely stood out to me was "rise of a trouble maker" because Nelson Mandela was a troubled kid growing up. He also stood up for what he beleived in. He was also a great leader for Sout Africa because he had very good self control. He even would have died for what he beleived in.

Montrell Sawyer said...

I agree with Brandi Baron Nelson Mandela did set amazing examples for people.

Montrell Sawyer said...

I also agree with Vincent Thomas he was calme even when his country wasn't in the best shape.

Unknown said...

The reason I think he was able to keep hate in check is because he knew if he had hate it would make things worst.

Unknown said...

When it said "After leaving the presidency, Mr. Mandela brought that moral stature to bear elsewhere around the continent, as a peace broker and champion of greater outside investment. "

Unknown said...

I agree with Jeremy Broner because he did keep his hatred in check by not adding ammunition which later led to great things.

Unknown said...

I also agree with Kyla because he did have a good heart and was a great leader.

Unknown said...

he was a hero to blacks and whites

Unknown said...

"leaders can afford to hate"

Unknown said...

Nelson Mandela was able to keep his hatred in check because he wanted to be a good role model especially since people were already out of control and if he di the same then it would just give everyone else even more motivation to do more sinful acts.

Unknown said...

I find it very interesting that after being in prison for 27 years Nelson Mandela's heart and spirit was not broken but in fact enhanced to help him carry on through all the hatred and doubt.

Unknown said...

I believe Nelson was able to keep his hatred in check and be the leader he was because he had a very kind and caring personality. According to the video, the narorrator said that he had a heart of forgiveness. I feel that Mr.Mandela is like Mr.Shabazz (Malcom X), and he has love for all Southern Africans.

Unknown said...

Something intresting that appalled me was the fact that he still had his kind personality after 27 years of jail.

Unknown said...

I agree with Kyla and how Mr. Mandela had a kind heart.

Unknown said...

I think Nelson Mandela was able to keep his hatred in check because he knew that he could and would avenge his friends' deaths with his actions to stop white domination in Africa. I also think that throwing him in prison only made him want to fight more his country.

Unknown said...

"In his five years as president, Mr. Mandela, though still a sainted figure abroad, lost some luster at home as he strained to hold together a divided populace and to turn a fractious liberation movement into a credible government."

Bill Keller

This part of Nelson Mandela's obituary is interesting to me because it shows the how being the president of Africa somewhat broke him but he did not give up in his fight for non-white domination in Africa.

I agree with Tracey because Nelson Mandela really was good at shunning the bad out of his life no matter how much bad surrounded him.

Unknown said...

I agree with Zoe Cooper Nelson Mandela did focus on the positive, not the negative.

Unknown said...

I also agree with Camryn Curry Nelson Mandela did want Africans and whites to be equal.

Unknown said...

I agree with Autumn Canty because Nelson Mandela did not enjoy violence very much and that's why he met with the leaders of the white men so less violence would take place.

Unknown said...

He kept his hatred in check because he didn't like violence and being mad at someone and trying to get revenge is a waste of time.

Unknown said...

I agree with kierstyn because all he wanted was to help his country be violence free.

Unknown said...

I also agree with Zoe because he was always a postive person.

Unknown said...

Tori Sargent you are correct leaders can not afford hate.

Unknown said...

After being in prision for 26 years, he became the first democratically president.

Unknown said...

I agree with Brandi Barron because it was rather inspiring when he gave his speech in the attire that described his religion and by wearing that he was showing how he wasn't ashamed of where he came from or who he was it basically showed his pride and his drive to be different from everyone else and instead of only saying it he showed it and while doing it he kept his head held up high and didn't have second thoughts abut anything.

Unknown said...

Nelson was a great man. His leadership and great speaking ability help him through the years.

The reason why Nelson Mandela was able to keep his hatred in check he was a great leader to many people, and he wanted people to follow his ways. What I'm exactly saying is that Mandela wanted people to do the same, and not let people have insecurities about what people say about that person.

What lines, details or quotations in the obituary,or any of the other times pieces about Mr.Mandela do you find most compelling or interesting
I thought in his court house speech was very interesting when he said he would die for the goal because that's a very important skill set to have to have a goal and would be willing to die just to see it happen

Unknown said...

I think he was able to “keep hatred in check” and be the leader he was because of his courage and heart. He was good in ending the system of apartheid in South Africa and he was and remains a strong person of social and human rights.

Unknown said...

Mr. Mandela’s quest for freedom in South Africa’s system of white rule took him from the court of tribal royalty to the liberation underground to a prison cell to the presidency. This was pretty interesting to me.V
